What is the FUSE Website?

FUSE is an annual interdisciplinary showcase celebrating student work, faculty mentorship, and creative collaboration. Each year, the FUSE website is redesigned and launched ahead of the showcase to serve as both a promotional hub and an informational resource.

I was a member of the Web Design team, a subgroup within the larger FUSE production team. Our responsibility was to design, build, and manage the website that introduces audiences to the upcoming showcase while highlighting the people and teams behind the event.

The Goal

  • Provide a sneak peek of what attendees can expect during the showcase

  • Centralize general information and FAQs to reduce confusion

  • Highlight the students, teams, and faculty behind FUSE

  • Deliver a polished, professional experience that reflects the creativity of the event

Design Process

1. Collaboration & Planning

The Web Design team collaborated closely with the larger production team to align on branding, content needs, and deadlines. We worked iteratively, gathering assets such as logos, headshots, and graphics as they became available.

2. Wireframing & Visual Design

Using Figma, I contributed to the creation of high-fidelity wireframes, focusing on:

  • Clear information hierarchy.

  • Scannable layouts for event details and FAQs.

  • Visual consistency with FUSE branding.

  • Responsive design considerations.

These wireframes acted as the blueprint for the final website and helped ensure alignment across the team before development began.

3. Development & CMS Implementation

The final design was implemented using WordPress as the content management system, with Elementor used to build layouts and integrate assets.

My contributions included:

  • Translating Figma designs into live pages.

  • Implementing logos, headshots, and visual assets.

  • Assisting with layout adjustments for responsiveness.

  • Ensuring content was easy to update leading up to launch.

Design Challenges

The website needed to achieve multiple goals:

  • Generate excitement and anticipation for the upcoming FUSE showcase

  • Clearly communicate event details, schedules, and FAQs

  • Showcase student teams, faculty, and collaborators

  • Be visually engaging while remaining easy to navigate

  • Be flexible enough to update content quickly before launch

Because the site is rebuilt annually, efficiency and clarity were essential.

Outcomes

The FUSE website successfully launched ahead of the annual showcase, serving as the primary source of information for attendees, participants, and faculty. The site:

  • Clearly communicated event expectations and logistics.

  • Highlighted the people and teams behind FUSE.

  • Provided an engaging preview of the showcase experience.

  • Supported last-minute updates through a flexible CMS structure.

Key Takeaways

  • Designing for an annual event requires scalable and adaptable systems.

  • Strong collaboration between designers and content teams is critical.

  • High-fidelity wireframes streamline development when working with a CMS.

  • UX design extends beyond visuals—it includes content clarity and ease of maintenance.
