What is Brick Explorer?

Brick Explorer is an augmented reality (AR) application designed to enhance the Lego-building experience. This app helps Lego fans quickly locate specific bricks and pieces in their collections. Using a search function and the phone’s camera, users can scan their scattered bricks to effortlessly identify the pieces they need.

The Problem

Lego enthusiasts often struggle to find specific pieces in large, disorganized collections. This creates frustration and disrupts the creative process, making it difficult to complete builds efficiently.

The Solution

Brick Explorer offers an intuitive way to locate pieces using AR technology. Users can search for a brick by name, shape, or category, and the app highlights matching pieces in their collection through their phone’s camera.

Design Process

I used Figma to design the user interface (UI) for Brick Explorer, ensuring a seamless and user-friendly experience. Every button, icon, and text element was created from scratch to create a cohesive design system. I combined these original elements with official Lego set images and graphics for authenticity.

Key steps in the process included:

  1. User Research: Identified pain points of Lego hobbyists through surveys and online community insights.
  2. Wireframing: Sketched low-fidelity layouts to map user flows and prioritize simplicity.
  3. Prototyping: Designed high-fidelity UI prototypes in Figma, focusing on AR functionality and visual appeal.
  4. Iteration: Refined the design based on peer feedback, optimizing for accessibility and clarity.

Key Features

  • Search Feature: Users can search by keywords or filters (e.g., size, color, shape).
  • AR Scanning: Scans physical bricks and highlights matches in real-time.
  • Visual Images: Provides clear images and descriptions of Lego pieces for easy identification.

Outcomes and Reflection

This project improved my skills in AR-based UX design, UI development, and user-centered problem-solving. While Brick Explorer remains a concept, the process strengthened my ability to design engaging and functional digital experiences. By integrating AR technology with a passionate community, Brick Explorer combines creativity and efficiency, offering Lego builders a tool to unlock their full building potential.
